1 BREATHING MONITOR - CLIFTON The Breathing Monitor can be used for investigating tidal volumes, reserve volumes and vital capacity, this apparatus is a lower cost, simpler-to-use version of the Clifton spirometer. Constructed with a one piece stainless steel tank housed in a durable painted outer case. The float is constructed from lightweight plastic and calibrated 0 to 7 x 0.5 litres with a metal counterpoise. When the tank is filled with water the water in the float chamber is contained. In use the float will rise and fall, allowing readings to be taken directly off the float or it may be connected to a datalogger with a motion/position sensor (e.g. DAT-400-325). Supplied with a rubber mouth piece that fits into a corrugated breathing hose which snugly connects into Breathing Monitor. Also included a nose clip and pen arm for fitting datalogger sensors. Oxygen consumption can also be measured which is useful in metabolic rate stud- ies. A simple lever control enables the subject to be connected either to the atmosphere or to the float for recording. A container for soda lime crystals is fitted which absorbs the CO 2 . The spirometer is designed to offer mini- mal resistance to airflow. This provides the user with greater comfort and ensures accurate results. The float is constructed from lightweight plastic and is calibrated in 0.5 litre steps with a maximum capacity of 7 litres. A pen arm allows attachment of a fibre tipped pen for recording results or for attachment to a position sensor for datalogging. Two flexible corrugated breathing hoses 0.8m long are provided.
