1 EVAPOTRANSPIRATION MODEL This Dixon/Joly experiment analogue apparatus provides an easy to set up and demonstrate model of the Dixon experiment on evapotranspiration. Easier to use than a potometer, no plant material is required in order to demonstrate transpiration and evaporation, with consistently reproducible results. The model uses a mounted plastic chamber to contain water, representing water in the ground, and strips of absorbent paper such as chromatography or blotting paper are used to represent plant leaves. The ‘leaves’ are sup- ported by flexible wires and the water can be coloured with a dye to show more easily where the water has ascended to in the ‘leaves’. A fan can be incorporated to represent wind or air movement, to show that evaporation from leaves takes place at a faster rate on dry windy days.
