Can be used to measure the uptake of oxygen by an organism during respiration and/or the carbon dioxide evolved. The sample is placed on a grid 20mm above a reservoir of potassium hydroxide solution. The U-tube is filled with a coloured solution forming a closed loop system. The potassium hydroxide absorbs the CO 2 evolved, the liquid in the U-tube will move according to the quantity of oxygen used by the organism during respiration. The quantity of O 2 absorbed is read either directly on the printed scale or by replacement air from the graduated syringe - This provides highly sensitive measurements.
