1 POLYMORPH This polymer has all the characteristics of a tough ‘engineering’ material yet it fuses and becomes easily mouldable at just 62°C. It can be heated with just hot water or a hairdryer and moulded by hand. Cat No. Description Price Per SMP-500-100 Polymorph - Small 3.54 100g SMP-500-150 Polymorph - Large 7.11 250g

6 SMART PUTTY ‘Silly putty’ or ‘bouncy putty’ has long been available as an amusement. Properly known as visco-elastic polymer or dilatent compound. This class of material has the remarkable property that it usually behaves as a soft mouldable plastic (like chewing gum), but instantly becomes a rubber if impacted: i.e. it bounces like a ball. The gum version of the putty flows more readily and can be used, for example, as a clock. A ball bearing (or similar) will descend slowly through a tube of clear gum at a uniform rate.) Supplied in 25g containers. Cat No. Description Price Per SMP-750-150 Smart Putty 3.87 25g 7 POLYOX (Polyethylene oxide) in a non-toxic, long-chain polymer with a high molar mass. Because of extensive hydrogen bonding, it is soluble in water. A solution of Polyox (approximately 1% w/v) behaves as an ‘elastic liquid’ i.e. it ‘self-siphons’. 5g is sufficient to make about 500 cm 3 of the fluid. Supplied in 50g pack. Cat No. Description Price Per SMP-600-100 Polyox 7.92 50g 8 BREAKING POINT APPARATUS (STRIP/WIRE TESTER) - NEW! This Breaking Point Apparatus allows testing of the tensile stiffness or elastic- ity (Young’s Modulus) of fine copper wires and other ductile materials (up to 30swg), as well as testing the strength of thin strips of various materials. The tester pinch bolts and clamping plates provide an easy way of securely clamping the wires or strips being tested, whilst also allowing loads to be conveniently applied. The apparatus has a maximum load capacity of 10kg, which should not be exceeded. The material to be tested is clamped at each end in one of the supplied tester clamps. The top tester is then hung on a clamped rod or retort clamp rod, whilst the lower tester hangs freely below. Masses can then be attached to the lower tester using a slotted mass hanger, with an increasing number of slotted masses (not supplied). The extension of the elastic material being tested can simply be measured by clamping or placing a millimetre ruler behind or alongside the test material (using the top of the lower clamp as a marker). Examples of materials which can be used for testing include copper wire, nylon filament (e.g. fishing line), elastic bands, rubber cord, hair strands etc. as well as strips of paper, polythene, rubber etc. Cat No. Description Price Per MTR-225-100 Breaking Point Apparatus (Strip/Wire Tester) 16.15 ea.
