1 PSU BASE JACOBS LADDER The Jacob’s ladder is a high voltage ‘climbing arc’ and consists of a pair of long metal electrode wires, connected to a transformer. The electrodes are protected within in a transparent polycarbonate tube. Holding down the push switch starts the formation of the arc, as the transformer steps up the voltage high enough to create a potential difference between the electrodes. This, in turn, creates a spark, which heats up and ionizes the surrounding air, forming a plasma. This superheated plasma causes the spark to move or climb up the ‘ladder’. Powered by a rechargeable battery and supplied with a power lead to connect to a USB 5v 2A plug top power supply. A charge indicator on the front panel illuminates when the push switch is held down. Cat No. Description Price Per ECT-500-100 Jacobs Ladder ELA-100-100 Mains Plug With USB Socket 5.67 ea. 2 ELECTROSTATIC STRIPS A pack of 20 polycarbonate strips, 10 of which can be positively charged and the other 10 negatively. Simply rub with a yellow duster and let the students work it out! By using the brass holders, they can be suspended from the string supplied and thus they are insulated/ isolated from any earth. The apparatus comprises a clear plastic dish 90 x 12mm diameter x depth, and base 140 x 125mm. Alongside each terminal is a thumbscrew system which permits fine height adjustment of the electrodes. Six electrodes are supplied, two ‘point source’ two ‘line source’ and two circular rings of 35 and 70mm dia. For use with 0-5kV EHT power supply. Cat No. Description Price Per ECT-255-150 Electric Field Apparatus 41.00 ea.

5 NEWTON’S/COULOMB’S LAW KIT For the experimental determination of Newton’s and Coulomb’s laws. This apparatus can be used to demonstrate repulsion, attraction of charged bodies and provides the ability to measure the angle between the 2 strings and thus the force between the two charged spheres. Conveniently to protect the apparatus and aid storage it can be folded and packed into its own base. The apparatus can also be used for simple measurements of mass, length, angle in mechanical experiments. The charge can be provided by a Wimshurst machine or a Van de Graaff generator or by simply rubbing a plastic rule with a duster. Contents: 1 foldable apparatus, 2 conducting spheres tied to a conducting wire, 2 conducting spheres tied to an insulating wire and accessories to build an electrostatic bell.
